The economic stimulus package from the Obama administration is benefiting the public in numerous ways. On February 17th the Port of West Sacramento announced awards totaling 30 million dollars for a cargo barge infrastructure between the ports of West Sacramento, Stockton and Oakland. Additionally a new crane is scheduled to be added to the equipment at the West Sacramento facility to enable the shallower port to handle more barge traffic. The new barge service will reduce truck traffic and pollution along highways throughout the region and will create and maintain jobs.
According to a press release Mike McGowan, chair of the Sacramento-Yolo Port District Commission says, “This is a great project for the port and Northern California. Adding containers to the cargo we can handle will produce significant economic and environmental benefits for our region and we look forward to implementing this exciting new service with Oakland and Stockton as soon as possible.”
